Mexican Mafia Bust in North County
U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy has announced details involving 119 federal indictments against gang members including a major boss for the Mexican Mafia. Rudy Espudo is said to have been in control of the Latino gangs in the North County Area. He and his associates are said to have demanded monthly dues for the Mexican Mafia from the various local gangs such as the Barrio Fallbrook Locos and the Westside gang.
"La Eme" is one of the most feared and complex organizations in the nation. It's a small, but powerful corporation composed of about 200 members. The organization was created in the California Department of Corrections in the late 1950's and uses prisons, jails, and the juvenile hall's to train its members. Its usual members consist of Chicanos, with the mafia preferring them instead of Mexican citizens. All local Latino gangs pay tribute and pledge their loyalty to the Mexican Mafia.
For now, the Mexican Mafia has been momentarily disabled. While the bust might have been a success, many are scared that this has only left a hole in the power struggle with the local gangs that will ensue for the right to control the different drug territories in the North County Area.
